Tunnels O&M


Continuous traffic flow is enabled based on the following criteria managed by the control room, which operates 24/7:

  • End components – direct traffic flow by providing drivers with real time traffic instructions and information: traffic lights, barriers, traffic counting sensors, cameras and electronic signs spread out along the road
  • Software: notes each end component at any given time and able to send instructions, in order to change given traffic conditions, to an individual component or a group of components, as required
  • Inbuilt Programs: define modes in which an individual component or series of components function in accordance with required traffic state
  • Operating approach: based on industry practice global traffic management approaches and includes traffic monitoring, identifying conditions, which are likely to affect traffic, degrees of impact classification and handling conditions according to degree of urgency
  • Work and procedures interface: developed in order to integrate relevant stakeholders entities to enable them observing the tunnels traffic control systems


Advanced Solutions has know-how and experience in managing, analyzing, characterizing and implementing models of traffic management in complex transport tunnels, integrating the use of traffic control systems and structure control systems.

The complexity of traffic incidents in tunnels lies within the potential of collateral accidents caused by minor once. To overcome this complexity, the group utilizes:

  • Emergency Bays – equipped with an emergency telephone to contact control room
  • Automatic Video Incident Identification System (AID) – full video coverage, automatically identifying irregular traffic conditions, which provides warnings to limit incidents impacts
  • PA System- allows communication with users, which is especially important during emergency situations
  • Communication – full cellular coverage and local radio frequencies are available and enable receiving announcements during emergency situations
  • Entry Barriers – operated automatically and prevent entry to the tunnels during emergency situations
  • Emergency Services Communication System – allow direct communication between the control room and emergency services providers
  • Smoke Ventilation – If a fire breaks out in one of the tunnels, the ventilators in the parallel tunnel work in the opposing direction to prevent smoke seeping in
  • Fire Detection – smoke sensors and fiber optic heat detection
  • Fire Extinguishing System – full coverage fed by an independent water reservoir (in addition to other external sources), which provides water via hydrants installed every 80 meters
